Travel Options and Info
Getting to Vancouver - Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is the main international airport serving Vancouver. Vancouver welcomes flights from all over North America, Asia, Europe, and Australia. Air Canada serves numerous international destinations non-stop from Vancouver, including several that connect to other cities with SPI houses: Brisbane, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, London-Heathrow, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, Orange County, San Francisco, Sydney, Austin, Nashville, Palm Springs, Phoenix, and Raleigh/Durham. Similarly, West Jet also serves a number of destinations direct to Vancouver: Las Vegas, Phoenix, Atlanta, Detroit, and Los Angeles. Flair Airlines offers ultra low-cost flights from Los Angeles and San Francisco direct to Vancouver.
International Airlines serving Vancouver with direct flights to cities with SPI Houses include Air France (Paris-Charles de Gaulle), Alaska Airlines (Portland, Seattle), American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth, Charlotte, Chicago-O'Hare and Los Angeles), British Airways (London-Heathrow and London-Gatwick), Condor (Frankfurt), Delta Air Lines (Los Angeles, Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Seattle/Tacoma), JetBlue (New York-JFK and Boston), Lufthansa (Frankfurt and Munich), Qantas (Sydney), and United Airlines (Chicago-O'Hare, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Newark, and Washington-Dulles).
Vancouver International Airport has a direct connection to downtown Vancouver via our SkyTrain Rapid Transit System. The YVR Airport station is located right outside the International Terminal and brings you downtown in 25-30 minutes. Trains run daily from about 5am-1am every 4-10 minutes depending on time of day. The fare from YVR to downtown is about $9 CAD. Of course, Uber, Lyft and Taxis are always an option.
SeaTac International Airport (SEA) in Seattle, WA is also an option that many Vancouverites take advantage of when traveling to the USA, as flights tend to be much cheaper from other US destinations. From SEA, there is a rapid-transit connection directly from the airport via Link Light Rail to King Street Station in downtown Seattle - where you can transfer to the Amtrak Cascades - which runs from Portland and Seattle north to Vancouver's Pacific Central Station several times each day. The trip via train from Seattle takes approximately 3 hours and runs along a scenic route offering views of Puget Sound and the Salish Sea. There's also a bar and free wifi on board! You clear customs with the Canada Border Services agency upon arrival to Pacific Central Station. Coach tickets on Amtrak from Seattle to Vancouver cost approximately $40 USD each way.
Getting Around the City - Vancouver is a very compact city, and most conclave events will be taking place on the Downtown Peninsula. In addition to Vancouver's main financial and business district - there are several neighbourhoods downtown including the West End which is the traditional heart of our 2QLGBTQIA+ community. You can walk across the "length" part of the downtown peninsula in about 30-40 minutes, and across the "width" part in 20-30 minutes. The peninsula itself is a slight hill - so you're generally walking uphill towards the centre of the peninsula from all directions, although it's quite a gradual climb. If walking isn't your thing - Vancouver has a network of e-bikes and scooters that you can rent through apps, and TransLink serves the peninsula extensively with bus routes connecting downtown to the suburbs. There's also a trolley bus (the #5/#6) that runs around downtown frequently along Davie, Denman, Robson, and Granville St, as well as SkyTrain stations underground. The SeaBus is a passenger ferry connecting downtown Vancouver to North Vancouver via Lonsdale Quay that runs every 15-30 minutes daily. Buses, SkyTrain, and SeaBus can all be accessed with a Compass Card and are all part of the TransLink network.
Safety - Vancouver is generally a very safe city, and this includes our public transit network and most neighbourhoods at night. Despite this, it's recommended that you maintain awareness of your surroundings at all times and always travel in pairs when manifested. Gastown is a very tourist friendly neighbourhood during the day, but can be dangerous at night. Adjacent to Gastown is the Downtown Eastside which is home to several of our unhoused community members, and experiences significant social issues including open drug use and occassional bouts of violence. It is advised that you only travel in this area when accommpanied by others. The Abbey of the Long Cedar Canoe works with several organizations in this neighbourhood to try to make life better for the people who reside there. Because of Vancouver's mild climate in comparison to the rest of Canada - the unhoused population is significant, and you will likely encounter many unhoused folks in and around the Davie Village. Generally, these folks are harmless and keep to themselves, although they may strike up a conversation with you while joyfully manifested.
